Great for type 4 hair. It’s a way of protective styling.
Protective Styling, says Janet, “Is what we normally do to lock our hair away. Usually in the wintertime with the harsh weather, but with the quarantine, we are seeing a lot more of it. It’s a way for individuals to get through it and maintain their hair for a few months.”

First, you need to determine what type of hair texture you have.  Janet suggests using  ‘The Hair Typing System’ made by Oprah Winfrey’s hairstylist Andrew Walker. The Hair Typing System breaks down hair into 4 types and then subtypes through texture. Once you have identified what type you are, you can find the products that will work best for your natural texture. Using this system, we are going to breakdown all 4-hair textures and give you recommendations for each.

Overall, “With the quarantine, this season is all about embracing your natural texture,” says Janet. “Finding products that are more maintenance based and styles that will enhance rather than change.”

For Type 1 and 2, the straight and wavy, Janet suggests the ‘Oribe Texturizing Spray.’ It’s a multi-use product that will create volume, enhance texture, finish, and give hold. Tip: It’s also a great dry shampoo for hair that gets oily.

HAIR TYPE 2

Type 3 and 4–the curly girls. Tired of the frizz battle, perhaps it’s about embracing the frizz. The Maui Moisture Curl Quench and Coconut Oil Line’ is a great overall Curl system. Creams are far superior over gels since they wont leave your curls feeling crunchy.  Try the Curl Smoothing Cream from Maui Moisture for extra curl definition and smoothness. Tip: Put the smoothing cream in when your hair is wet and either air drive or diffuse. Also great for touch-ups.

Type 4 Hair - Kinky– With the humidity, you want a product that’s going to smooth out your edges and keep them in place, without leaving your hair flaky and dry. Janet suggests ‘The Edge Tamer from the Canadian company ‘Up North Natural.’ It’s an all-natural product made of Castor Oil and Rosemary. It also promotes hair growth and is overall healthy for the hair. You can use as much as you want to smooth out and maintain humidity. A little goes a long way, but the more you use the more hold you have. Tip: Use for curl definition and flyaways
