FALL FRINGE

By Brittany Sinclair

A great way to update your fall look is by adding a face-framing fridge. I know we were all tempted to do a DIY trim during the lockdown, but don’t risk it. Make an appointment with your stylist who can give you a proper consultation and offer helpful styling tips. We sat down with Sarah Amson, co-owner of Bang Salon, to ask her expert advice and guidance.

D. Tell us what you love about bangs!

S. Bangs are classic. They are a great way to express your unique personal style. I love the way bangs make you look and feel youthful, they don’t call them the “French Botox” For nothing!

d. Botox without the needles, count us in! So we’ve decided we want to try out a fringe, we walk into the salon, sit down with a stylist, and ask for your advice. Can you take us through a consultation?

S. I always want to make sure that bangs will not only suit my clients face, but their lifestyle as well. That means making time for regular bang trims and added styling for their bangs to their morning routine.

D. How do you decide what type of cut will work best for your client?

S. There are lots things I take into account before deciding on bangs. The shape of my client's face, the size of their forehead and where their cheekbones sit, just to name a few. And from there, we work together to choose a style that will work best.

Below we have a few references of different face shapes wearing bangs:

What about maintenance?

Bangs require more frequent trims than the rest of our hair. Be prepared to make a bang trim appointment every 4-6 weeks. Resist the urge to DIY your bangs! Leave that to professionals, your stylists are happy to do it and this quick service is usually complimentary.

Styling Bangs can be tricky— do you have any go-to styling products to make it easier?

A dry shampoo or dry texture spray is a must. Bangs absorb the oils from our face and tend to get greasy quickly. I love the Dry Texture spray by Oribe. They come in travel size bottles so you can always have one on hand!

Any trends you’re seeing for fall?

This fall I’m seeing some really fun trends with colour! I’m loving the e-girl look, where your bangs and front pieces are coloured lighter than the rest of your hair. But, my favourite bang trend of the moment is the shagg inspired bangs. I'm obsessed with all things ‘70s—it’s very rock and roll.

If you’re not up to the fridge challenge, there is another low commitment alternative!

A clip in bang can be a very low maintenance way to change up your look on the fly without having to go for the full chop. “They are super easy to use and you can ask your stylist to trim and customize them to your face shape,” say’s Sarah.

For myself, a clip-in bang was a great option due to all the front hair-line loss I suffered after pregnancy. I didn’t have the right amount of volume to comfortably commit to a fridge but always wanted to fulfill my Bridget Bardot fantasy. LUXY HAIR, a celebrity go to for hair extensions, has some amazing clip in alternatives that will look and feel completely natural and no one will be the wiser. I can’t wait to try their clip in ponytail next!

PSA - Sarah gave me the most amazing cut and ‘bang’ that I left feeling ultra fabulous. It’s amazing what a trip to your stylist can do for your confidence. Remember to support them during this difficult time as they have to us throughout the years.
